We all know how horrible human behavior can become. Seldom do we talk about it openly because any and all behavior in some way mirrors each of us. Betrayal in some form owns each and every human. Since we know this about our self, as a species. We have taken measures to bring control to our depraved natures. This is done through secular and religious law. Many like to think that law in the United States is based upon the nations Judeo-Christian heritage. It’s supposed to be the foundation for our moral and legal system.
An example of this is given in the Bible. A group of professional people trained in religion and law brought a women to Jesus. She had been caught in the very act of having sexual intercourse outside of the boundaries of marriage. The penalty according to the law was that she was to be stoned to death in public. These religious and legal scholars asked Jesus what he thought should be done. This was a test to see if Jesus would agree that the law should be honored. Jesus did not pay much attention to them. Instead he stooped down and with his finger doodled in the sand. Suggesting that their religious and legal customs were not worth observing. But, they pressed him for an answer. So he stood up, and said, he who is without religious or legal depravity. Let him throw the first stone. He then again stooped down to continue His doodling in the sand. A strange occurrence followed starting with the oldest scholar to youngest. One by one they left pricked by the remembrance of their own depravity. Picturesque of the reality that age does not make one less vulnerable to acute depravity but more so.
Here are a few thoughts from history. “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely,” phrase from a letter written by Lord Acton to Bishop Mandell, April 5, 1887, “Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it; and I know, my lords, that were laws end, tyranny begins,” a thought from a speech by Case of Wiles, January 9, 1770. Enlarging upon political philosopher, John Locke, who wrote in his Second Treatise of Government,1690, and said,”Where ever law ends, tyranny begins.”
And Jesus was left alone with the woman… and asked, Women where are your accusers?… Is there no man left to accuse you?… she answered, no man, Lord. Jesus responded, neither do I! … go and change.
Jesus failed the test. He did not honor the law. It was one of many of his deeds that lead to his execution. Fact, the Christ worshiped then was an enemy of religion and the state. Question, why is the modern church the embodiment of the state? The movement under Jesus was movement for change. Today it has been corrupted and made a bed fellow of the state.
The nation is faced with monumental decision concerning Donald J Trump. It appears that his crimes far exceed those of Richard Nixon in the 1970’s. With the possibility of being found guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors. Then made to stand before the Senate to face charges as alleged by the Peoples House of representatives.
If exonerated, then Trump has the governments forgiveness. Then he should be admonished to go and change. Only mercy could exonerate Trump. Because those in the peoples house and the Senate like the woman before Jesus could find no accusers who were not also guilty. Because the House, and Senate are as guilty as is Donald J Trump. Which means under the Christ principle, they can not pronounce guilt.
That still leaves the nations people with a major dilemma. What to do with a government that has clearly demonstrated the aforementioned precepts. Where ever law ends tyranny begins. The chaos within the Trump government is testimony that power tends to corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Donald J Trump puts all Americans at risk.
If all fails, we the people have this Constitutional precept available to us in our Declaration of Independence, “When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for the people to dissolve the political bands…. We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness…. That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive to those ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it…”
Remember from the Shadrack, Meshach, and Abednego analogy from Daniel? We are the collective consciousness of that fourth genderless person in Nebuchadnezzar fiery furnace. Regardless of how hot the fire is the people can endure. Are we up to the task?
