There he was the most hated man in the Middle East. Sitting alone on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.
When his friends approached Him and asked? We know from your teachings that this historical era will end, can you share with us some signs as indicators for that time? (cp. Matthew 24:3).
So He sent them a shocker, that no doubt went way beyond their comprehension. He answered, “When you see the abomination of devastation, spoken by one of my associates, Daniel.
Who stood in this very holy place a long time ago. That will signal my return to this earth, after my departure. And that will signal the end of this age, centuries after your deaths. (cp. Matthew 24:15).
So lets see what Daniel had to say about this matter. In the first year of Darius …, who was made king over the Chaldean’s. In the first year of his reign, I, Daniel understood by the books the number of the years specified by the word of the LORD through Jeremiah the prophet that He would accomplish seventy years in the devastation of Jerusalem. (cp. Daniel 9:1-2).
Apparently, Daniel had discovered these words. “Then it shall come to pass, when seventy years are completed that I will punish the King of Babylon, and the nation, and the lands of the Chaldean’s for their sins,” says the LORD, and I will make it a perpetual devastation.” (cp. Jeremiah 25:12-13).
To go along with all of what’s been said. Daniel may also have discovered the writings of another historian, Ezra. Who recorded the King’s history, and then make a proclamations freeing the Jews. Who had been held in captivity by King Nebuchadnezzar for seventy years
And so it was, King Cyrus of Persia, the King; who destroyed the once most powerful ruler of the known world, the Babylon empire. Issuing this historic proclamation recorded in Ezra 1:1-3, “The Jews are free to return to Jerusalem.” And with many perks provided by the Persian people! (cp. Ezra 1:4).
What Daniel learned drove him to pray for mercy. He set the tone for making wrong right. By recognizing sin for what it is, a curse. Then acknowledging that righteousness belongs to God, and to all mortals, shame of face. (cp. Daniel 9:3-19).
Then the man Gabriel said Daniel, “… whom I had seen in the vision flying swiftly, and reaching me about the time of the evening offering.” Swiftly defined like as a flash of lightening, Ezekiel 1:14.
Saying, “O Daniel, I have come here to give you the ability to understand. … your prayers have been heard!
The command went out, and I have come to tell you, for you are greatly loved; therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision. The vision refers to the time of the end.” (cp. Daniel 8:15-17; Daniel 9:20-23.
Gabriel provided Daniel with content that might have baffled him. He starts out by saying seventy weeks are determined for your people, and for your holy city to finish the transgressions.
Which, was necessary as punishment for sin. Resulting in reconciliation between you, your people and Me because of everyone’s sins. (cp. Daniel 9:24-25).
The seventy weeks are complex and difficult to understand. Some have speculated that the weeks are weeks of years. Equally 490 years.
I am not going to delve into that debate other than to say. It’s a prophecy given to Daniel involving the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Note the phrase. “To finish transgressions, to make an end to sins.” Resulting in reconciliation between God and all of humanity, excluding no one.
Which answers the question presented to Jesus. What will be a sign of your coming and the end of the age. Two thousands years have passed and the end hasn’t occurred. It may be millennium’s away, or it could happen before the sun sets today.
Gabriel took the world community through some uncharted prophetic times. Gabriel did that through his conversation with Daniel 9:24-25.
However, there is still a most consequential period of history to be experienced. Before that aforementioned simple question, experiences its complete answer. It’ll be through a pathogenic bacteria; that strikes rendering the notion of any God, as irrelevant to human consciousness.
The journey continues tomorrow.
Another step closer. Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; but in the middle of the week he shall bring an end to the sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abomination shall be one who makes desolate, even until the consumption which is determined, is poured out on the desolate. (cp. Daniel 9:27).
