Life offers consistencies that are memorable, but the converse is remembered as dung. So lets travel the roadways of Zophar, a prime nemesis of Job. Perhaps we’ll discover some applicable truths for our 21st century earthling occupants. Packed with many euphemisms that no doubt have varied applications.
So Zophar asks, don’t you know that since humans were placed upon this earth, that the triumphing of the wicked is short, the joy of the godless but for a moment?
Though their height reaches up to the heavens far above the clouds, yet they will perish forever like their own dung. Those with awareness of them will wonder where are they? The public’s remembrance of them will be like a nightmare. And like all such dreams, awakening chases them away. All that remains are their bones which will lie down with them in the dust of their flesh.
The psychological and physical experience of wickedness to them is like something sweet in their mouths. To savor it hopefully, forever, they hide it under their tongues. To no avail because it is certain to reach their bowels. And there it becomes like cobra venom. Wickedness has no lasting satisfaction, because it must always produce misery though their wicked struggle to hide their misery. Wickedness is the polar opposite of righteousness, and Divine Providence will not allow opposing currents to survive.
Though their bellies may appear full through ill gained endeavors. At a fitting time God will cast His fierceness against them. It will rain on them while they are in the midst of another sumptuous dinner.
In the end the heavens will reveal their iniquity. That is the totality of their wickedness. God’s fierceness wears many hats. Being alienated by Him is a hat to be avoided. This discussion was developed from, Job 20:4-29.
Centuries have passed since Zophar canvassed his portrait of wickedness. Then, as today wickedness can be defined as an intentional mistake, like a twisted truth intended for one to receive an unearned benefit. To a gross felony designed to create maximum harm. It can reach beyond individuals to include nation states.
For us, in this the age of grace, God provided Jesus, as the bearer of our sins. It is recorded, “Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood. He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him, who had the power of death, that is the devil.” (cp. Hebrews 2:14) And, “And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not only ours only, but for the whole world.” (cp. 1 John 2:2).
So to partake in His atoning sacrifice as our propitiation (substitute) follow the prompts found in Romans 10:9-10. Then notice verses 11-13, all of which creates the universality that so many seek. And if our paths don’t cross in the world, they will in the next.
