a thing called character

“Of all the properties which belong to honorable people, not one is more prized as that of character,” 18-19th century American politician, Sen. Henry Clay.

In the era of Trump character matters little. Although it’s doubtful that the quote associated with him, and having been said by him is what really governed his life. Politicians during his era and reaching us today were experts of double speak. Meaning what they say and do are very different. Of course Trump can’t be accused of double speak because he only lies.

Concerning Clay, he was tagged as the ‘Great Pacificator’ or the ‘Great Compromiser.’ He earned those tags from his efforts to shield the nation from the brewing discord over slavery. Source: Britancia. And here we are in the 21st century, and the nation is still struggling to resolve the horrors of slavery.

It’s difficult to reconcile today how anyone could think it was legitimate to consider another person as their personal property. But woman suffered the same horrors, as having been considered the property of their husbands. Another evil is the lie by corporate conglomerates who argue, that workers don’t have the right to dictate how those conglomerates function. Workers Unionize because that’s the only way fairness will ever occur in the work place.

The problem with truth is that it wears to many different hats. And as such, it falls far short from Clay’s admonition.

Here are some universal character builders that when lived as a lifestyle, and not just empty verbal expressions. Will make for a better person and thus a better community. Erasing the hurtful conditions that have tortured so many people for so very long.

People let us not love in word or by tongue, but in deed and truth. And above all things have fervent love for one another, for love erases a multiple of sins. Let love be without  hypocrisy. Be kindly affectionate to one another with passionate love, in honor, giving preference to one another. (cp. 1 John 3:18; 1 Peter 4:8 and Romans 12:9-10).
