Thoughts from Jane

“There are few people whom I really love, and still fewer whom I think well. The more I see of the world, the more I am dissatisfied with it; and everyday confirms my belief of the inconsistency of all human character, and little dependence can be can be placed on their varied appearance of meriting any hope for change,” Jane Austin, Pride and Prejudice.

Paul wrote to Timothy, not in response to Ms. Austin in particular. But Paul’s words answer Jane’s dilemma while at the same reaching us today.

Also satisfying the old adage, “The more things change the more the stay the same.” Paul’s, adage is as follows, “Lovers of pleasure rather than God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away from! For of this sort are those who creep into households taking captive of gullible people. Always having opinions but never coming into knowledge of the truth. (cp. 2 Timothy 3:4b-7

Because, “These people, as impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.” (cp 2 Timothy 3:13).

What’s the answer? “All scriptures is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (cp. 2 Timothy 3:16).

The Bible is a complex book covering many centuries. Written by many different authors. Therefore its contents are not always applicable from one particular generation to the next. Careful study and discernment is absolutely necessary if one going to rightly divide the word of God.

We live in the age of grace which is much different the age of law. The age of grace had its birth after Christ was resurrected from the grave. During the age of grace study study Romans – Philemon. That doesn’t mean the rest of the Bible should be discarded.

Here’s a real Old Testament gem, that when applied to ones life, would have many beneficial outcomes. “They who are slow to anger are better than the mighty, and they who rule their spirit, then those who take a city.” (cp. Proverbs 16:32). Or, “As the deer pants for water brooks, so pants my soul for you O God.” (cp. Psalms 42:1).

In addition there are prophetic declaration made by Old Testament writers that will impact the church age and the ages to follow.
