Some issues live on forever, so it seems. It’s just a matter of believing in ones ability to make sure ones issues have a prevailing outcome. The late, Studs Terkel, 16 May 1912 – 31 October 2008, saw prevailing as a matter of attitude, for he declared, “Ordinary people are capable of doing extraordinary things.”
Perhaps at no time during modern times, has the United States been in greater need of having ordinary people accomplishing the extraordinary.
The gamut of choices are like ripe fruit dangling from the branches of trees. Which, piece of fruit to pick first? It doesn’t matter! Because it’ll be sure to be one representing an unparalleled challenge, if American democracy is to survive.
Here’s on of them. The peoples vote was ignored because Hillary won the national vote by nearly three million votes over Trump. Though trump lost the election, he was awarded the presidency because of the nations antiquated Electoral College.
How did the nation get stuck with such a system, that destroys the very foundation of democracy which is one person, one vote. It occurred because the nations founding fathers didn’t think ordinary people were capable of making such an extraordinary decision, when electing a president.
So they allowed the states to elect electors for their state. Five hundred nineteen of them, then each state, would vote. And whatever, candidate secures 270 votes within the Electoral College is declared to having been elected president.
Two of the nations last three presidents won the presidency in the Electoral College, despite having lost the popular vote. Both were Republican candidates, meaning that the majority of voters were democrats.
Fourteen states, and the District of Columbia have successfully gotten their jurisdiction to become by law part of a movement to bypass the Electoral College. Each has pledged to give their votes to the presidential candidate who won the popular vote. That movement is known, as, The National Vote Interstate Compact.
Jurisdictions within that compact now have a total of 189 Electoral College votes. The compact will formally go into effect legally once the jurisdictions secure a combined 270 votes in the Electoral College. After that is accomplished, democracy in America will be realized for the first time. Because the voting public, will finally have what has been erroneously fabricated, one vote per person nationally. Securing two hundred seventy votes out of five hundred nineteen votes is not democratic. The Electoral College from its inception was designed to suppress the will of the people.
Of course their is resistance for various selfish reasons. Florida is one of those jurisdictions. Elected state Republicans are the majority party in the state legislature. Joining the compact would mean their 29 Electoral College votes would have to be given to whatever candidate wins the popular vote.
Good bye trump, if you survives impeachment. You won’t, if freedom denier, Republican Mitch McConnell agrees to a fair senate trial. However, its nothing new for working America to see democracy denied.
Twice in the last three presidential election cycles the loser has been declared the winner and both were Republicans. Republicans serve the interest of the elite.
Always in nondemocratic ways Republican goals are to deny working people the power of one vote one person. Think what that would mean in the work place, for health care, pension benefits and whole repertoire of other benefits.
Clergy people get sick, die, vacation, retire or move on. This padre duly ordained is available to temporarily fill that vacancy. Perhaps teach a Sunday school class. Share in an adult Bible study group. You select the topic from the traditional calendar right through to the corridors of nontraditional. Formal churches are businesses though most deny it. What ever perspective about the churches primary purpose. One thing is certain, they have to keep the pews full with people, so that bank accounts are replenished. Forcing the clergy to avoid controversial topics. With me that’s not a problem. If the flock get work up, no problem because its easy to say good bye. Then on the other hand, they might respond enthusiastically. Wouldn’t be the first time that this Padre would have learned of such responses. After all, there’s got to be a reason why church attendance is down. Nothing ventured nothing gained.
Some readers despise organised religion for a conundrum of reasons. But are very interested in specific religious topics. So select a topic of interest from the alleys of the somewhat traditional right through to corridors of issues often avoided.
With a degree also in political science a whole repertoire of current issues can be selected. From the cradle of the traditional arena through to a galaxy of topics that don’t get enough attention, but should, like the one addressed today. Take a bold step by laboring for the enactment of the National Vote interstate Compact nationally. Resulting in democracy becoming an American experience.
