There is enough gloom to go a long way. So here is some cheery stuff to brighten life. At the turn of the twentieth century life expectancy for women was 48 and for men 46 years of age. By mid-century life expectancy had climbed 71 for women and 66 for men. And here we are shallow into the twenty first century, with life expectancy climbing to 80 for women and 75 for men.

But the experts on longevity, do not agree on just how far up the aging ladder we can climb. They report that French citizen, Jeanne Calment lived to be 122. With American, Gertrude Baines, reporting that she is 114. Let us wish her well, as she reaches for birthday 123. But the experts seem to agree that our climb up the longevity ladder is due to several factors. With such factors being better nutrition and improved health care. Along with that most important element, disease prevention.

Being a scientist causes the experts to probe the ‘whys of longevity.’ Here are a few of their conclusions. SLEEP: getting enough but not to much. A million people participated in a self reporting sleep survey. Reporting their sleep habits. From their participation, the experts concluded the following. Optimal sleep for longevity is about seven hours nightly but not less than five hours. Sleeping more than eight hour or less than five hours on average shortened lifespans. EAT RIGHT:

Want to live an extra 14 years. Here is how it is done according the experts. They conducted a study of 20,000 participants. Those who ate five servings of fruits and vegetables everyday. And who enjoyed alcohol in moderation and did not smoke. And who indulged in exercising, captured those extra 14 years.

MIND YOUR MIDDLE: The experts say, we got to pay attention to our waistlines. The National Institute of Health, concluded that belly circumferences was strong indicator for longevity. Get this! Measurements of more than 44 inches for men and 41 inches for women equaled a 25% shortened life span. (source: Dr. Mark Liponis)

Now a little from some health enthusiast. Some with no credentials but lots of experience. Food is important, therefore, their diet represents a vegan vegetarian diet. Being vegan means eating only non-dairy foods. Many vegan vegetarians drink only ionized alkaline water because it helps to detoxify and energize the body. They prefer health care from an acupuncturist and chiropractor. Because both help the body balance, itself through its God given properties.

Concerning exercise and sleep. Some exercise by running, pumping iron in in their homes or at a local gym. Which full body stretches. In every aspect of life they have goals. Like running the New York City Marathon, again! As a way of celebrating ones 100th birthday. In the meantime, some will settle for mowing down a 50 miler out West.

While exercise is important, the vigorous stuff is done out of pure enjoyment. Most of what is done is not necessary, what is necessary is to exercise in moderation. When adding exercise to your life style keep that in mind and experience that results for yourself. The best teller of the truth.

Stress management is important and exercise helps relieve stress. Allowing for quality sleep. Much more could be said about the contents of this discussion. Other than to say, that incorporating the aspects in this discussion into your lifestyle. Might give you the good fortunate of being able to avoid common ills of your peers, including hospitalizations

Christians should be grateful to God for each lesson taught by Him. Some testify that they came upon healthy lifestyles the following way. This is one of those lessons, “What? Know you not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have of God, and you are not your own. For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and spirit which are God’s,” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. Causing the beholder to strive to have a body, mind and spirit fit for the service of God.

So, it would seem, that experience is the best teller of the truth, then go for it! And secure what we all want most, good quantity and quality of life!!!

Health power of imagination

Zillions of self help books seem to be available for those trying to get one up on what ever it is that they are trying to overcome.

With the Bible being one of those books available. However, the Bible is a very complex book because it deals with so many subjects. With one of them being health. This discussion will deal with stress because stress seems to have so many health related ramifications according to the world of doctors.

To start things off, the Bible gives us this message. Yet man is born into trouble, as sparks fly upward, Job 5:7. Of course, that we all know from experience.

Here is the remedy, but first this needs to be said. The Bible is a very private book. It is applicable only under specific conditions. If the reader cannot relate to the following, then what occurs, will be like the information from so many self help books. A whole lot of something about nothing that works.

So here we go, the apostle Paul said, “But if the Spirit of Him, who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you. He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit. that dwells in you,” Romans 8:11. That is a mystery to those outside of God’s family through Jesus Christ.

I don’t want to leave the impression that there are not some excellent self help books out there because there are such books. But this padre prefers, the Jesus way!

Jesus said, “Come to me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, I will give you rest. Take my yoke (way) upon you, learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and you shall find rest for your soils,” Matthew 11:28-29. Meaning weariness from heavy fatigue, laden stress. Sense His humbleness of gentleness in those verses. Expressed in genuine love which works as follows. Likewise the Spirit Himself makes intersession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now Jesus who searches the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit is. Because Jesus makes intersession for the saints according to the will of God, Romans 8:26-27.

Jesus prays for us according to the will of God. Here is how to benefit from those scriptures. Absorb those scriptures into your soul; by virtue of you imagination, then you will see the following occurring. Very slowly through your imaginary powers allow the following verses to sooth the laden fatigue that stresses your soul. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in the green pastures. He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake, Psalms 23:1-3. It is said that the 23rd. Psalm is the most recognized scriptures in the Bible by the general public. Now you know why because its what everybody wants and needs. And which sends the public scrambling of to buy those self books.

And hear is the secret of what makes all you read work. So shall be My word be that goes forth from My mouth, it shall not return unto me void. But it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing which I sent it, Isaiah 55:11. It is a supernatural occurrence that can not be learned because it must be experienced. All the scriptures used in this discussion are of a supernatural nature.

There are a lot of things that this padre is not very good at, but managing the fatigue of stress isn’t one of them. One of life’s great killers, so we are told. Largely because Jesus said, “I will give you rest.” Make it yours also.

The Crime against Nataline Sarkisyan

A seventeen year old woman, named Nataline Sarkisyan was scheduled by her doctors to receive a liver transplant. But the families insurer corporate giant, Cigna denied the claim.

Her mother, Hilda, took the matter public by going to the news media. And she, lamented with a broken heart and in tears. Scolding Cigna, and the health care industry, those conglomerates of profits and death. Saying, “The insurance company can’t decide who’s going to live and who’s going to die. Only doctors and nurses, thank you.” This resulted in a massive protest led by the California Nurses Association. Finally, Cigna relented, and granted coverage for her liver transplant. But it was to late because within two hours, Nataline died.

Her death was a criminal offense committed by Cigna. Which is no different from some well intentioned person being successfully punished for a DUI homicide. And likewise should all the Cigna executives responsible for her death. But it’ll never happen because they are allowed to commit such homicides because they are protected by congressional lawmakers and our federal courts. So, that makes the government complicit in Nataline’s death. And those kinds of tragedies will go on until enuf Americans say enuf. And, work collectively together to force the necessary change.

And now is the right opportunity to demand change. As key Democrats, struggle to get 51 senators to sign on to pass a senate reconciliation bill. Which will create a public option for thousands, who no doubt will follow Nataline’s fate without it.

So, pick up that phone, and call your Senator. Either thank them for their support, or demand that they get on board. No doubt, many lives will continue to be at risk without a public option.

Fitness classes for mind body and spirit

IMPORTANT: GOOD HEALTH IS A CHOICE NOT AN ACCIDENT!!! Paying special attention to the person we love most, ourselves.

Starting tomorrow, Saturday, 28 February 2009, Church for Sanctuary will launch a new service for those interested in mind body and spirit fitness. These classes will start at ten o’clock and end at eleven o’clock. All classes will be held on Saturdays, unless otherwise noted. A one hour time frame is allotted so that participants can plan their day. But I will be in no hurry to run off, and will be available to continue either our discussions or training.

The fee is a $20.00 dollar donation in cash with donations being collected on the first Saturday of the month and will cover the month. Breaking down to donations of $5.00 per week. A real bargain considering the benefits serious participants will achieve. There are no obligations and participants can discontinue participation at any time but there will be no return of donation fess for any remaining weeks for the month. Participants will not be joining anything, nor will addresses or phone numbers be collected. There will be no donation fee necessary (but donations will be accepted by those willing to make such donation) for Saturday 28 February 2009. Official classes will start Saturday, 07 March 2009, with your $20.00 donations being accepted then. However, for the month of March, four $5.00 dollar donations will be accepted. It is not the intent of this clergyman/trainer to accept donations from people who may conclude that such a fitness program is not for them.

This first class is designed to answer any questions that likely participants might have, 28 February 09. With the class starting, Saturday, 07 March 2009, the focus will be on developing cardiovascular endurance. The class structure will depend upon fitness levels of the participants. Most likely, we will start with walking and gradually move into jogging. Classes will also introduce upper body strength conditioning. Moving onto the stretching of your muscles, as an important component to complete body conditioning. In some instances stretching can help eliminate pain. Some pain is caused by physical inactivity. Many uncomfortable parts of the body that cause discomfort and minor pain. Sometimes causing disruption of sleep which can be eliminated through gentle strength and stretching conditioning, including lower back discomfort.

Without question, we are what we eat, drink and think, so the combination of activities for mind body and spirit can improve your overall fitness level. Yep, we will be discussing mind activities to stimulate blood flow to the brain which might help retard the onset of dementia. Science is still out on this one, but not for me, discover why on Saturday. Perhaps turning you into a person you never thought possible.

You should know that I have been at this for at least 55 years. The news has all been good up to now. So here is the down side, aging is not our friend, in many ways it diminishes the quality of life. But it can be slowed down, and even helping us to regain some of that old vigor. Which is the primary purpose, of my fitness classes.

For those of you fortunate enough to be young, these classes are for you, too. Because what I teach will give you a leg up on the quality of your life as the years advance. I should know, as I am 72, extremely healthy, with great recuperative powers, never hospitalized or on any medications except for pulled muscles and dental work.

This past Saturday, the 21, I turned in a 21 mile run, just for the fun of running. I must say, none of what I teach in my fitness classes has any expectations for encouraging participants to run such distances. Such distances are completely unnecessary for fitness of the mind, body and spirit.

One last thought, obviously what has been said will be expand upon during classes, but nothing said, is intended to counter your patient/doctor relationship. Always share with your doctor, what you are learning and practicing in my classes. The two of you know what you are capable of doing when it comes to over all fitness classes. His or her advice should be primary to your participation in my fitness classes.

To get an idea of the scope of the classes; it might be helpful to a previous posting, just clink on the calender date 22 February 2009. These classes are not designed to promote Christianity; however, on occasions a scriptural reference might be made to like the scriptures referenced in that posting. Because we are a unit of mind, body, spirit and synchronized by God.

These classes are primarily designed for people 50-80 years of age. With the exception of this Saturday, 28 February 2009. All ages are welcome, and if there is sufficient interest, classes will be formed for other ages, including classes for teenagers which can be conducted at the site or at the home where the parents live. Also for those a little shy, classes can be conducted in your home. For retirees, and other people classes can be formed on other days beside Saturdays.

These classes are not about, who can do the most by speed or strength because that is often the way of fools. It it about fitness for the mind body and spirit. Accomplished in moderation, and at the level of each participants comfortable ability. We will work as a unit encouraging and helping each other.

IDENTIFYING ME: I’ll be wearing red training shorts, with either a long sleeve or short sleeve gray shirt, with non matching socks one red and the other blue and white training shoes. I wear glasses, and have white hair, and will be near the first picnic table under the trees, near the river.

LOCATION and DIRECTIONS —- Classes will be conducted at Rotary Riverview Park in Temple Terrace. There is ample parking and shade from the trees. The park is located just off of Fowler Avenue. If you are traveling East on Fowler, get in the left turning lane after you cross the Hillsborough River bridge. Turn left and you will see Fisherman’s Landing Apartment complex, turn left again and that will be Rotary Park. If traveling West on Fowler, at the first traffic light past I-75 exits, turn right. There you will see Fisherman’s Landing Apartment complex, turn left and proceed to the park. If coming off I-75, directions are the same as those traveling West on Fowler.

Health a choice not an accident

Health is so important that without our health, everything we have is diminished to nothingness. Such an avoidable tragedy that can be avoided by some very simple changes. For starters, how about a change in diet and a little exercise. I do not like that word diet. Because in our culture, it suggests something that is temporary. Think of diet as a change in eating habits that negates a return. People who do not, are the people who are often found looking for the newest weight loss gadget. Which allows the fight to continue, in that battle of the expanding mid section. Which we Americans, seem to be losing.

The government reports that sixty percent of the nations children are over weight. They say that thirty percent of these children are really fat. Ever noticed while visiting one of Americas places of commerce. Places like banks, shopping malls, amusement theme parks. And a favorite of mine, the neighborhood grocery store. There you will see, as I suspect you have, people beyond fat. So huge that these stores provide motorized shopping carts. Occupants are so fat that they must spread their legs to make room for their bellies to hang between their legs. If this is what today’s America looks like, then think what tomorrows America will look like. When these overweight and fat kids become adults.

Seems like we Americans have two problems. We seem to go to the extreme in everything. That includes politics, religion just a couple of things tearing the country apart. Then we have the matter of diet and exercise which is doing more than tearing the country apart. The over indulgences in diet and lack of indulgences with exercise, is destroying the nation! Whatever happened to moderation? The common sense approach of not going to extremes.

So, I thought I’d pass this piece of moderation along. The first step in moderation is called “portion control.” One easy step to take, is use smaller plates. Next we all should eliminate those trans fats that are making headlines; as a killer.

A little more about diet. What is about to follow may not be for everyone. But before that conclusion is determined, one might want to do some serious research. It’s advisable to eat foods produced as close to nature as possible. By that, it’s meant skip foods that are sprayed with poisonous substances like pesticides. In short anything foreign to the body. Waxed fruits, preservatives, and food coloring for starters. They are known cancer causing agents. They are without any nutritional value!

We all know how important water is to the body. Avoid tap water, unless you filter your tap water. Tap water is loaded with heavy metals which are cancer causing agents. Another workable option is to buy filtered bottled water. Preferably, bring glass bottles, if you use a commercial vending system. Avoid plastic bottled water. The plastic as you know in made a gasoline derivative which dissolves into your water little by little. But the best choice is to drink ionized water. Ionized water creates necessary anti-oxidants which help to detox the body. In addition, ionized water restores energy which neutralizes free radicals. Damage from free radicals leads to many diseases. As we drink ionized water it supplies the body with extra oxygen, the source of greater energy and endurance. Take it easy when drinking ionized water. Because at the beginning, as the body detoxes itself, you will feel a temporary loss of energy. I started by mixing ionized water with filtered water using gallon sized bottles mixing them 1/2 and 1/2. As time progressed, and my body adjusted to the detoxing effect, I increased the strength of my ionized water. This gradually increases the bodies ph balance. It is like drinking liquid antioxidants which neutralizes free radicals. Helping to keep, or restore the body to improved health, internally and externally.

Last, but certainly not least in importance. Consider a vegan vegetarian diet made up of organic foods, as pure as possible. Healthy living requires higher learning. So for good health, you can not beat good research. And it has another benefit, conclusions are self obtained. Absent the persuasion of retailers, who sell for profit, and not health. For that matter, absent the persuasion of writers like myself.

I value this phrase, “to each their own.” That’s the way it should be. Life is about choices, may yours be one of good research resulting in good health. Health is a choice not an accident.

I leave you with these two last thoughts. “I beseech you therefore brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is the good and acceptable will of God,” Romans 12:1-2. Why? because our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit which is in us, whom we have from God, and we are not our own. We were bought with a price; therefore we are to glorify God in our bodies and our spirits which are God’s, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.

Not the usual posting by this writer. Who is without any special training in diet or exercise. Just decades of research and experience. Along with decades of good health which I attribute to my vegetarian diet. Which has become vegan vegetarian diet. Never had to start an exercise program because I developed exercise habits as a child. Those habits have been owned by me for decades, and by the grace of God for decades into the future.

A little more on exercise, get involved in some fitness program. The experts say swimming and walking works wonders for the human body when combined with diet. Do you know that calorie burning machine in our bodies burns extra calories for up to twelve hours after exercise. The combination diet and exercise is the path to health. This writers, path combined with his diet is running, and the gym, for some serious workouts.

Also good to remember moderation, is the key to our success. Call it by what ever name is preferred extremism, or over indulgences they both end in disaster.

Run for the body walk for the brain

Research outlines the benefits of each; with one common theme: get moving. Whether it is to detox the brain from mental exhaustion or just to start a new routine. Many people take a walk or a run. Although getting a positive effect from exercise will occur from any kind of exercise. Which can be done anywhere, except when done where the air is polluted.

To be sure running can and does send some people to the ER for assorted orthopedic reasons. (But then, so does sitting on your rear end driving a car, emphasis this writer). But research suggest, most people take more benefit from regular exercise than not.

Researchers at Standford have reported the results of a 21 year study that tracked more than 500 runners who where in their 50’s or 60’s and are now in their 70’s or 80’s. The joggers who put in an average of four hours a week on the trail were matched with for comparison with an otherwise similar group who did not run. Nineteen years into the study 34 % of the nonrunners had died, compared to 15 % of the runners.

Of course, time still caught up with the runners. With many of them reporting difficulty dressing or grooming or getting out of a chair. But on average, runners’ initial report of a disability came on average 16 years later than that of reported by nonrunners on annual questionnaires.

But for the brain, walking may actually be better than running. Since there is more oxygen left in the blood to reach the brain than from most vigorous exercise. Studies in the elderly have found that a stroke risk can be cut by as much as 57% in those who walk as little as twenty minutes a day.

Another study of older women found that those who walked 17 miles a week or more a week were about 40% less likely to experience mental decline than those who walked a half a mile a week. Brain studies have shown that walking helps to tune up specific regions of the brain related to spatial relationships and keeping focus on specific tasks. (source: Scripps News Service)

So what does the scriptures have to say about exercise. “For bodily exercise profits little, but godliness is profitable unto all things, having the promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come,” 1 Timothy 4:8. Those scriptures do not suggest that exercise has no value. It is just that proportionally godly development is preferable. However, Paul reminds us when he said, “What! know you not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have of God. For you were bought with a price; therefore, glorify God in your body and in your spirit which are God’s, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. So a little exercise combined with spiritual development seems to be part of our responsibility in devotion and service to him.

This writer is deep into a sound body, mind and spirit. Having turned in an 18 mile run yesterday. Finished it off with some abdominal and back work. Like to finish with a full body stretch just to keep the muscles flexible. Combined with lots scriptural study relating such study to currant events. Almost forgot, food and water is important, so I am a vegan vegetarian, who consumes drinking water that has been ionized. Ionized water puts oxygen back into the water, our life source. What many do not know is that the water they drink is killing them. For as Paul said in Romans 12:1, it is my reasonable service because I want my body to be holy and acceptable to God.

Full moon magic-mind altering substances

From the heavens where God resides, humanity after receiving a spectacular perigee moon (an event where the moon appeared 14% wider and 30% brighter) in December. Perhaps as a gift in honor of our Christmas pageantry. We earthlings are about to be the recipients of yet another spectacular perigee moon, 10 January 2009. As if to say, if you enjoyed my spectacular Christmas perigee, enjoy another one, as my gift for the new year. Which occurs because the moon does not move around the earth in a circular motion, but rather in an elliptical manner. With the moon tilting one side of itself closer to the earth, a perigee moon. With the other tilting away from the earth, an apogee moon. It took astronomer/mathematician Johannes Joesph Kepler to figure out and explain this phenomenon 400 years ago. But he could only do so because, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows his handiwork,” Psalms 19:1. And because, “The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof; and they who dwell therein,” Psalms 24:1.

These moons are spectacular because they appear once or twice a year. And here we are, the sons and daughters of our Creator. Finding ourselves privileged to witness again the Creators heavenly artistic beauty, so soon after the last one. This is how the scriptures define this heavenly beauty. “And God said, let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be signs, and for the seasons, and for days and years. And let be be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth. And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good, Genesis 1:14-18.

What does all this mean? It means this for everyone. There will be a much stronger gravitational force impacting nature. For people like you and mean, it will mean stronger spiritual intuition. Especially for you Capricorns, born between, December 22- January 19. (Available to construct spiritual readings). (How the forces of God impact life with special insights and gifts). It is a time to come to grips with Psalms 46:10. “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” Quietly meditate, (slip a spiritual CD into you CD/DVD player, play it so it is barely audible) (prayerfully absorb the music into your soul) (after a good dose of moon absorbing) concentrate and determine what the Spirit is saying to you. Through John 10:3, “To him the porter (Spirit) opens and the sheep (us) hear his voice; and he calls his own by name, and leads them out.” Guaranteed to cause a Psalms 23:3 experience. “He restores my soul; he leads me in the path of righteousness for his name sake.”

People really need to be relaxed in order to experience this spiritual gift from God. Many are so pulverized from the constant conditioning by our external secular forces that the Spirit of God can not be heard. Therefore, carefully and sensibly partake of some mind altering substance. I have two favorites, but both are declared illegal by the state. So, I substitute them by having a small amount of whiskey. This mind altering state can also be attained my performing certain yoga or some other transcendental technique. As always, in everything caution and moderation is to be practiced.

World growns Ain’t gonna study war no more

Some of you who know me may be thinking as you read this posting. That he’s at it again. Indulging in that happy juice from the opium plant. Why not, after all, it is a God given nutrient. It is found in Genesis 1:29, “And God said, Behold! I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the earth, and every tree in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food.”

But rest assured the mind, is free of any mind altering substances, for now. Other than the spirit of Christ, which can cause some rather euphoric experiences. As for the body, well it is clean, thanks to a strict vegan vegetarian life style. I keep getting younger instead of older. Guess as they say, I must have the cart before the horse. That happens when one, also knows the value of vigorous exercise and diet.

Concerning exercise, for a long time, I have been considering conducting exercise classes in a local park. The primary focus would be on running. When appropriate, diet and other forms of exercise would be discussed and introduced. The goal would be to help people learn the value of exercise. For those wanting to drop a few pounds, this exercise enthusiasts has tons of tips to share.

Separate classes would be conducted depending on a persons level of interest and fitness. The classes would be for people 50 years of age and older. Would also conduct classes for people under 50 years of age.

I am 71 years of age and very fit. Yesterday I ran 15 miles and ran another 15 miles today. I am healthy, and not in any need of medications. If such classes materialize there would be no expectation or need for class participants to run those distances. I do it because I have some goals. One is to run the New York City Marathon in the year that I become 100. Also I plan to run some 50, and 100 mile races in the future.

I am posting this in hope of getting some feed back concerning readers interest in participating in such classes. Plan to create a separate website discussing exercise and health issues. The website and exercise classes would be secular in nature. No attempt would be made to introduce religion in web postings or exercise classes. Thought I would share some pretty incredible stuff. With the purpose of creating a focus on the Middle East. Because world turmoil, is erupting there engulfing the area. Spreading and slowly swallowing the entire world. And with President Bush announcing today, that all options are on the table concerning Iran. Things could suddenly get a lot worse. Hope people are calling their congressional representatives. And encouraging them to support Congressman Dennis Kucinich’s, 35 Articles of Impeachment of President Bush.

With all the urgency coming from everyone, and anyone, who is anybody on the geopolitical scene. One scream is constant. Find resolution for the Judea Christian-Arab Muslim conflict. In truth they do not really mean what they seek. Empty rhetoric! Furthermore, they do not frame it that way either. It always framed in in association with one or more nation states. They might have more success addressing the real problem which is religion. Very serious and unresolvable conflicts between several religions.

But it is not happening, instead resolution seems to be escaping the region and the world. Because resolution, is sought from a geopolitical perspective. The conflict is between three religions. Which is represented by Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Crying for these three religions to give them the following.The pleading comes an old African American spiritual, “Down by the Riverside.” Some of the lyrics go like this, if you recall. “Going to lay down my sword down by the riverside, Down by the riverside. Ain’t gonna study war no more.”

Another spiritualist, Micah, put it this way. “… and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; and nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more,” Micah 4:3.

“But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree, and none shall make them afraid; for the mouth of the Lord of Hosts hath spoken it,” verse four.

“For all people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the Lord, our God forever and ever, verse five.

The focus is on a few words from verse five. “For all people will walk in the name of his god.” Perhaps those words represent this clergyman’s euphoric vision in Christ.

The worlds three main religions, Judaism, Islam, and Christianity trace their roots and authenticity to Abraham. The Jews, reject the humanity of Jesus and all his associated teachings. They see God as being spirit. Christians find their authenticity from Abraham to David, to the birth of Christ in Bethlehem. While the Muslims claim to authenticity is passed to them through Ishmael.

In that these religions are responsible for the world’s chaotic state. It would seem that they must sense that the world is heading for utter chaos and collapse.

The problem is that they do! Each believing that their version of God will deliver them victory with God establishing a new and better way for humanity to exist.

Which leaves me to ask, which religion is the right religion? Could it be that all three religions represent the perfect and correct approach to God?

Well if there is any merit to the prophecy of Micah, the possibility exists. Sometime in the future “all people will walk in the name of his god.” Now that is pretty incredible stuff!! I think.

If one gets down in the gutter where it is nasty and dirty, with your enemy. Where push comes to shove, and for whatever reason there is a breather in the action. Unique discoveries are made. The cry is, don’t want to make war anymore. It is the universal longing of most people.

What one discovers in that gutter of conflict. Where people get hurt from the turmoil of conflicting ideologies. Is that the people who do the serious work in getting the upper hand. Is that deep down in their inner being, they want to turn their weaponry into “plowshares” as instruments for the machinery for the cultivation of the ground. And those “spears” into instruments for pruning plants for the harvest of fruits and vegetables.

Universally governments are oppressive and basically evil. The only difference is some are more oppressive and evil than others. To compound the matter, religion always finds away to corrupt the world community through government. Pick your religion, and your government and ‘bingo’ the proof is in the corruption. They will not allow the people to take their swords to the riverside declaring “ain’t gonna study war no more.” Which means not gonna listen to religious clerics of any stripe, or the geopoliticians who serve them, anymore! Which is of course the religious clerics and geopoliticians worse nightmare. For the clerics it would mean ’empty cash registers,’ for the politicians it could mean justice before the world court.

Wow, that happy juice from that opium plant is deliriously euphoric.

In the end it could happen according to 95 year old Studs Terkel, who said, “Ordinary people are capable of doing Extraordinary things, and that’s what it is all about. They must count.”

It would be better to have Micah’s world, where nations shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither will they learn war anymore.

Cindy Sheehan:Death of a Warrior

Like life itself the inevitable occurs, death. We all know this, but for most, life styles are not altered that might extend this gift called life. Death visits, because sometimes people live beyond the bodies capability to survive. Many signals are offered by the body. Prompting visits to the family of physicians. Who do their best to keep us going.

That was the case with Cindy Sheehan during the course of the summer of 2006. In her resignation letter posted on the internet, she said,”my health has suffered and my hospital bills from last summer (when I almost died) are in collection.” But she recovered to some degree, but the lady tagged, “the face of the anti-war movement,” succumbed as a political activists on Memorial day.

Her letter of resignation offers some interesting insights. Valuable insights for those interested in change. Because change is often a very costly enterprise. Unfortunately, Ms. Sheehan learning experience came at the end of her anti-war campaign. Plus its not often we get such good information. Worthy of under lining for people contemplating taking up a particular cause in the future. Or, perhaps for people, deeply engaged in some cause.

Like, Cindy Sheehan, all advocates for change will learn the following. But in her own words,”This system forcefully resists being helped and eats up the people who try to help it. I am getting out before it totally consumes me or anymore people that I love and the rest of my resources.” Cindy, discovered that war is a well entrenched institution. She put it this way,”I began this single-minded crusade to try and change a paradigm that is now, I am afraid, carved in immovable, unbendable and rigidly mendacious marble.”

In conclusion she said, “Good by America… you are not the country that I love and I finally realized that no matter how much I sacrifice, I can’t make you be that country unless you want it.”

Signing off she wrote,”It’s up to you now.”

Most certainly, Cindy Sheehan, is a woman to be respected. She was not just a complainer but rather a doer. She sacrificed much to end this dreadful process in American history; a criminal war in Iraq.

Actually, I am surprised that she was able to endure her anti-war campaign so long. Social activism like a diet has components that can not be violated if a person wants to obtain a certain goal. When dieting, energy burned (calories) must equal calories consumed in order to maintain body weight. When this law is violated in either extreme weight loss or gain the consequences are severe. It is more complex with social activism. Because people can not see the changes like they can by stepping on the bathroom scales. With social activism, in order to stay healthy people must must consume as much rest in the form of recuperation as they expel in physical and emotional exhaustion. Or they will experience, the Cindy Sheehan syndrome which equals “burnout;” a potentially deadly disease.

Perhaps readers are wondering if that is what caused Cindy Sheehan to quit, burn out. Frankly, I do not know. I was just responding to her whole letter of resignation. Along with my long experiences being associated with social activists. Observed some compelling parallels worth sharing. Hopefully, some lessons were learned.
