Hey there! Mr. and Ms. America and you kids, too. Is Daniel ringing the nations door bell with a message from God? With all kinds of calamities from bizarre weather, to rapid national acceptance of homosexuality. Perhaps manifesting itself through what most never anticipated and still don’t. No cash to pay its bills, a shocker indeed. No matter how it plays out, people with smarts should take it as serious wake up call. The larger question, is what to do about it; but first lets hear from Daniel. Who says “HE changes the TIMES and the SEASONS; HE removes KINGS and sets up KINGS; HE gives Wisdom to the Wise, and KNOWLEDGEÂ to those who know UNDERSTANDING,” Daniel 2:21.
As an empire, is the American one, DOOMED? And is a new global bully about ready to emerge? If so, would it be China? This padre thinks not, but certain to be a major player on the world scene. But rather an evil already in place, hiding in mosques. Which are nothing more than Islamic military fortresses, camouflaged as religious institutions. The weaker the empire becomes the more devastating will be their attacks. Its been their global history for centuries.
But Islam will not have its global empire because the King of the North will trick them and destroy them. Maybe because Christendom didn’t take the Apostle Paul’s advice and get rid of them as recorded in Galatians 4:30. But to be feared, are two unlikely forces, who will join together. And form a union with a third party, who together will set the stage for the extinction of humanity. With probable success, except for Christendoms sake it fails, who is that player? A paragraph of home work!
Decision making to say the very least can be very nerve racking. Especially when the decision under consideration is clearly forbidden by secular and religious law. That’s exactly what a German university professor wrestled with when he decided that it was okay to ignore secular law, if a religious precedent could be found.
For this discussion the two men under consideration are Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who also happened to be a Lutheran clergyman. And Jesus Christ, who also is God.
First Bonhoeffer, because he was the author of a philosophical discipline he tagged as situation ethics. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, decided that all adverse conditions merited situational ethics response. Meaning that the situation that a person encountered dictates their response. Even when murder was being considered, as an option of his ethics.
Disobeying the laws of nation states, when their laws threatened the church can be easily justified. But finding ethical justification for breaking God’s laws, presents a far greater rational of justification. If for no other reason, then the eternal consequences of God’s judgment.
Such a propositional justifiable ethic for murder would also have moral consequences for the clergy. Bonhoeffer must have considered how the public would view the church, when its clergy sanctioned murder. Well the Lutheran church in Germany, as a body didn’t buy into his church sanctioned ethics. Didn’t matter Dietrich Bonhoeffer made his decision, and the following is a part of his ethical rational.
Bonhoeffer lived during the time of Hitler’s Nazi Germany. He concluded that the Nazi doctrines were an abomination to God. Therefore, as a disciple of Christ, he had to take some course of action to reverse the Nazi plan. The German Lutheran church had debated the problem of Nazism and found no remedy. Especially, as to whether killing Hitler could be justified from a Christian perspective. Bonhoeffer could not wait for his churches resolution. He joined the underground, and they plotted to kill Hitler. He paid for his participation with his life.
Bonhoeffer, as a theologian knew that Lutheranism held the Ten Commandments in the book of Exodus to be the governing principles on matters of live and death. Exodus 20:13, “You will not kill.”
Dietrich looked to the founder of his faith, Jesus Christ. He discovered that Christ himself broke the law. To justify the breaking of the law, Jesus referred His critics to an Old Testament law breaker from the book of Samuel. David, and Christ used human necessity, as a justification to do something that was not lawful.
One day Jesus and His disciples were walking through a grain field on a Sabbath day. The disciples plucked the ears of grain, Mark 2:23. According to Jewish law that was considered work which was prohibited. Exodus 20:10 … “you will do no work. The LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it sacred,” v.11.
The enforcers of Jewish law were observing this, and confronted Jesus. They told Jesus that the behavior was in violation of the Sabbath day law, Mark 2:24.
Jesus brought to their attention what David did, when he and those with him were hungry, v 25. They went to the house of God, and ate bread that was only to be eaten by the priests. It was not lawful for others to eat the bread, v. 26. Setting a precedent for breaking the law in the future.
Jesus told the enforcers of Jewish law that the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath, v.27. Declaring that the Son of Man is LORD also on the Sabbath, v.28.
From the Christ example, Bonhoeffer thought that Christ most likely would have approved of killing Hitler. This was based upon Jesus reversing centuries of Jewish law by making it lawful to work on the Jewish Sabbath. Thus making the Jewish law irrelevant to Christendom depending upon the circumstances. Concluding that Jesus Christ, himself was a practitioner of situational ethics. The law was ignored to better accomplish human need. Therefore, the elimination of Hitler would also better accomplish human need.
If you are a student of scriptural history, then you know that God often used murder as a justification for sinful behaviors. Promising to do so, even as the church age moves to closure. Naysayers use such an argument to suggest that Christendom is hypercritical because our God who said, You will not kill, often killed himself. Furthermore, he gave permission to others to murder. Here is one example, it’s found from 1 Chronicles 14:10, And David inquired of God, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? And will you deliver them into my hand?” And the LORD said to him. “Go up, for I will deliver them into your hand.” More evidence, God was the originator of situation ethics and not Dietrich Bonhoeffer. And the church failed God, in Nazi Germany.
So how does all the aforementioned play out today? It plays out by becoming a master of situational ethics. The one that works best is to learn to act violently in a nonviolent manner. Because, only a motivated army of Christians will save America. Or will the church duplicate the church in Nazi Germany.
