Most have heard it said that the more things change the more they stay the same. Take Health Care Reform bogging down the Congress, all these months. With the President drooling to sign it into law.
Here is why! A new study on health care reform showed the power and influence of the industry. Put together by Center for Responsive Politics at Northwestern university. Then published by the Chicago Tribune, on Sunday, 20 December 09, Discovered that the health care industry spent $396 million this year to make it certain that a bill would come out of congress favorable to them. The pockets run deep through out the health care industry. Because to get their kind of legislation, they spent $862 million in 2008-2009 combined. The money is the power. Now the Nuts and Bolts of the influence. No fewer than 166 ex-congressional aides packed the halls of congress helping the congress shape a bill to satisfy their new bosses. Now with that kind of fire power, what chance does the American public have at responsible health care reform? None!
Even more shocking is the estimated $1 billion spent by corporate conglomerates for the years 2008-2009. Sending lobbyist to coach congress to steer favorable legislation the corporate way. What it all boils down to is this-THE PEOPLE BE DAMNED-IT’S PROFITS THAT MATTER.
Howard Dean, “Any measure that expands private insurers’ monopoly over health care, and transfer millions of tax payers dollars to private corporations is not real health care reform. Real reform would insert competition into insurance markets, force insurers to cut unnecessary administrative expenses, and spend health care dollars caring for people. Real reform would significantly lower costs, improve the delivery of health care, and give all Americans a meaningful choice of coverage. The current Senate bill accomplishes none of these!” (source Washington Post)
What I want to know is when, if ever, will the American people say, enuf is enuf of this B.S. This is supposed to be a government for the people and by the people. That noble notion never got a start from the get go. As a liberation theologian, I keep hoping that the people through the church will wake up and get that noble notion of and running for the people.
The only reform that will occur from that legislation will be more misery for all American consumers. Because the legislation is designed to allow the medical industry to find new, and more inventive ways to deny quality care for all Americans. What ever changes take place will swirl around the adage that the more things change the more they’ll stay the same. Count on it! It’s how democracy works in America.
The peoples servants in the Congress, Nancy Pelosi and John Boehner respective house leaders. And Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell respective senate leaders. And the “post turtle,” note posting form the calendar dated, 28 Sept. 09, for a laugh. Because this post turtle in the White House, Barack Obama, had to do something because the people were beginning to catch on about the fraud perpetuated upon them through the health care industry.
The country is in such a financial mess because of these corporate thieves. With the American government being complicit in this fraud. Both stealing from the American consumers and each other. When suddenly everything that was supposed to continue as is, went topsy turvy, turning everything up side down, and going into the abyss of corporate and political corruption. For the sake of those fat cats, through out the health care industry. With the exception of one element of that industry. The most important, the workforce who makes those fat cats, fatter. The over worked, under paid, over taxed and unappreciated employees. Which is a truism for all industries, from A-Z.
Meaningful health care reform sent shock waves through the elected elite, who do not identify with the people but with their corporate bosses. So they huddled together and played a game of charades with the American public. A word game of combined deception yet to be experienced by the American consumers. With the end result being greater thievery being perpetuated upon them by the health industry and their political double talking public servants.
It’s a dog and pony show because legislators and the president must show their masters at their dog and pony show. That they can be counted upon sit up like dogs on a leash, and not to roll over without their masters command. And can be counted upon like any pony in a circus to be ridden to glory at the behest of the health care industry. That is if they want to be re-elected. Once again demonstrating that the more things change the more they stay the same.
And that is why consumer legislation never brings the desired results. And it’s why future legislation to fix the broken health care industry will be another dog and pony show.
And if you, like me, do don’t think very favorable about representative government, when it comes to getting a quality deal in the market place of fairness. Neither does God!!! For it is written, “BEHOLD! the nations are like a drop in a bucket, are counted as small dust on the scales,” Isaiah 40:15. And “All nations [from which governance proceeds] before him are as nothing and vanity,” Isaiah 40:17. Because their nothingness and vanity is based upon excessive profiteering. Jesus kicked them out of their favorite market place the Jewish temple of worship and calling them thieves, Mark 11:15-17. Followed by the expected consequences of verse 18. Courage always has its consequences then and today.
The main point is that Jesus is not against the earning of profits. He taught such concepts during his lifetime. Its the excessive profits that is abhorrent to God because it’s the pathway to greed and vanity. Representing the constant pursuit of nothingness or spiritual emptiness. It is what God meant, when he said, “… that man does not live by bread only, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD, does man live,” Deuteronomy 8:3. So said the greatest liberation theologian through Jesus Christ, who repeated his Fathers words, when confronted with the source of humanities troubles, Matthew 4:3-4. The very bases for our *acting out* as liberators of injustice. What is to be sought is balance which is something that can never occur between commerce and government with the people caught in the middle. So the people have to make it happen by siding with God. That is the story of biblical history, as it has impacted people.
