Repulsive spectacle at Fort Bragg.

With more and more of America joining the world community by denouncing the war in Iraq. With America complaining that the war is not worth the loss of life. Estimated Americans against the war in Iraq number 62 % of the population and growing. Army recruitment’s are down. Alarmed over those truths the government staged a failed PR campaign in North Carolina and fed the country more lies.

The loss of American and Iraqi lives based upon deceit and lies will go down in history as a great American tragedy. Because we now know that the cause for war was based upon manufactured phony intelligence. Meetings were supposed to have taken place between Al Queda and Iraqi agents. Which we now know never took place. ” W ‘ wants the nation to remember 9/11 in conjunction with his war in Iraq. When no evidence indicates a connection between the organizers of 9/11 and the Iraqi regime. Then we had the bogus central justification for launching the war. Baghdad’s “weapons of mass destruction,” which of course never materialized.

So great are the crimes against Americans and the world community that one can only hope that those responsible will be impeached by the American Congress. Indicted and tried as war criminals.

His speech at Fort Bragg created an alarm. His choice of a military base as opposed to the oval office for delivery of his speech was a signal. That in “W” we have an office holder who wants to be seen as a imperial leader. One who is not accountable to the rule of law, nor to the American public, or world community. This writer has long held the the Bush family suspect. Especially, “W” because in him the disintegration of democracy is taking place.

Facing the prospect of American troops being stuck in Iraq for another decade or more, according to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. That reality, along with the lies, and the 200 billion dollar cost is beginning to rattle the American consciousness that something is very wrong. Sensing this caused Democratic Senator Joe Biden to come to the rescue. He said, “Unless we regain their support we are in real trouble.”

Thus, ” W ” staged a dog and pony show at Fort Bragg. In an attempt to regain American support for his conquest of Iraq. He said, ” We fight today because terrorists want to attack our country and kill our citizens, and Iraq is where they are making their stand.” That statement has no factual bases. It represents a statement of desperation designed to rally support for a failed war. If the Iraqi people are “making their stand” it’s because they reject a brutal occupying force in their country. America’s war on Iraq has killed hundred of thousands of people. The country has been bombed and re-bombed. The Iraqi people have suffered missile attack after missile attack. Civil targets have been napalmed. Fallujah considered a strong hold for resistance fighters was left in ruins. The resistance continues because the Iraqi people will not accept the conquest of their country for its rich oil fields. And a launching pad, for American aggression against other countries in the region.

Why would anyone believe America is interested in establishing democracy in Iraq as proclaimed to the nation from Fort Bragg? When the nation has a history of over throwing democratic elected governments. And supporting ruthless governments when it serves an American purpose. Establishing democracy sounds nice when you are as desperate as “W”.

With all that is known about the lies and deceit over the war in Iraq. It’s plain criminal for “W” to plead with young Americans to consider a “military career.” Of course what choice is left with the announced failure in recruitment goals but to encourage enlistment. “W” and the congress know that the nation is seeing the war for what it really represents, another American tragedy. Americans should protest the war. Applaud American youth for saying no to military enlistment and war. Encourage American neighbors and families to demand the return of their loved ones from Iraq. We need Vietnam style resistance to the war in Iraq. And scold the government for the ONE BILLION SHORTFALL IN FUNDING FOR VETERANS HEALTH CARE.

Americans must resist the call from people like Republican Senator John Warner who claim that opposition to the war is demoralizing to the troops. That was the cry concerning the war in Vietnam. Vietnam was wrong and so is the war in Iraq. If the American people do not stand up and end this war in Iraq, the nation will see itself fighting there another decade or more. Remember that is the prediction of the Secretary of Defense, a decade or more.

” W ” asserted that progress is being made in Iraq. Here are some thoughts to ponder as to whether progress is being made.
1. Daily attacks which include the number of U.S. troops killed has nearly doubled from last year at this time.
2. 135,000 U.S. troops in Iraq as of June 2005.
3. 16,000 estimated Iraqi resistance fighters. Plus an estimated 1,000 insurgent fighters.
To this writer the above figures show a loss of progress. Especially in light of the fact that the 17,000 defenders of Iraq are considerably out numbered by the best trained and equipped fighting machine in history.
4. Less electricity is being generated today then a year ago. The Iraqi people have electricity for around 8 hours a day.
5.The country lacks adequate sanitary facilities causing much illness. Children are suffering! Drinking water is not safe.
6. Iraqi people are subject to much violence by occupying forces.

Another mistake in the White House?

A columnist for the Texarkana Gazette reminds readers that several years ago Jeb Bush asked for the public and the press for privacy. The Governor sought privacy for himself and his family because his daughter had been busted for abusing pharmaceuticals. His requests was pretty much respected.

It is always good to see courtesy extended to a family when they are troubled by a family tragedy. The columnists wonders why Gov. Bush is not extending the same courtesy to Michael Schiavo. She laments the fact that Michael Schiavo has not been extended the same courtesy by Mr. Bush. Instead Mr Bush has persuaded a prosecutor to investigate and determine if Michael waited to long before he called 911 for help.

It’s rather incredible that Gov. Bush has stooped to such behavior. Especially, when one considers the complete public exoneration of Mr Schiavo by every professional who has torn apart his life. And just as incredible is the fact that none of these political buffoons have offered a public apology for their behavior in light of the scientific evidence recently released that Michael Shiavo was right. His beloved wife had been dead for a very long time.

It also magnifies the danger of religious hysteria through out our modern society. Especially, when it has penetrated the White House, the Congress, and local government across the nation.

Why would the Governor want to keep the ghost of Terri Schiavo public? Which will only cause more hurt for at least Michael Schiavo. A man who has had to watch ” W ” and the nations other political buffoons amuse the world at his and our expense.

Could the rational for Gov. Bush to behave in such a low condescending manner be because he wants to assure the religious right? That he will be their dog, on their leash, and will bark on command in pursuance of their agenda. When he announces his candidacy, to replace his brother in the White House.

Stand with Amnesty International, and the belief in the power of ordinary people to bring about extraordinary change.

This is a continuation from the posting 15 June 2005.

Amnesty International ( AI ) published its first report concerning torture in 1973. Here is what they discovered. ” Torture thrives on secrecy and impunity. Torture rears its head when legal barriers against it are barred. Torture feeds on discrimination and fear. Torture gains ground when official condemnation is less than absolute. The pictures of detainees in US custody in Abu Ghraib, Iraq show that was true 30 years ago remains true today.”

The world was outraged as a result of pictures coming out of Abu Ghraib depicting the torture of detainees. AI reports that there is reason to believe that the same practices are occurring to other prisoners held by the United States.

A gulag occurs when the evidence shows the torture of detainees who are helpless to defend themselves. It thrives and grows when international standards for the treatment of detainees is ignored. As is the case, with this current horrible administration in Washington. And when the American congress does not call for a complete investigation.

We have an administration in Washington according to AI that is attempting to redefine torture. By ignoring the application of the Geneva Convention, and arguing that coercive interrogation does not violate the Geneva Convention.

This administration holds detainees as ” Ghosts ” meaning people are held incommunicado. Detainees, AI reports are turned over to third countries known to practice torture. A government now exists in Washington that holds detainees arbitrarily and for indefinite detention. This they do in violation of international law, according to AI. The employment of military commissions by the US has made a mockery out of justice and due process, they charge.

The United States is the unrivalled political, military, and economic hyper – power, according to AI. As such the US sets the standards for the way other governments behave around the globe. AI, states that when the US, the most powerful country in the world thumbs its nose at the rule of law and human rights. It provides a licence to the world community to commit wrongs with ” impunity ” and ” audacity. ”

Therefore, concludes AI, the US has create the “gulag of our times.”

Do not think that torture is new to the United States.

Mob lynchings by white people of African Americans with government sanction occurred. Because the US congress failed to legislate federal law making a lynching a federal crime. The use of the filibuster in the senate. To prohibit federal law making lynchings a federal crime is plain and simple and abomination unto God. The senate used the excuse for the filibuster as an infringement upon STATES RIGHTS. That represents a sin against humanity that never can be forgiven. Such lynchings represented for this country the worst conceivable torture. Because the government brags that it sees itself as Gods beacon upon a hill for the rest of the world to see and emulate. God forbid!

AI, most likely are students of history. And as historians they must see this current administration emulating darkness rather than light. A darkness more dark than its already twisted history in this country and around the world. Perhaps they coined the phrase ” gulag of our times ” in order to awaken the people of the this country and the world that a new darkness is here. Time to act!

Understanding Amnesty International tag of ” gulag of our times. ”

It seems logical to assume that a persons life experiences shapes that persons reaction to current events. At least, that seems to be the case for this writer.

Because this writer is so critical of this current American government, both from the domestic perspective as well as the international. It has been decided that readers should get a glimpse of the writers life shaping experiences. It is from those life experiences that cause this writer to conclude that Amnesty International ( AI ) is correct is asserting that this current administration represents the gulag of our time.

As a child growing up, this writer saw the hate directed at his mother from his fathers side of the family because she had married an Native American. To further exacerbate the experience my grandfather converted to Roman Catholicism. His daughter was raised Roman Catholic. My grandfather, Red Cloud attempted to shed his Indian heritage and culture through a name change. He became Harry Phillip. Consequently, this writer could write a book on those life shaping events. Suffice to say those experiences caused me to see a sacredness in a persons heritage and culture. It drew me to the priesthood. The focus of my life has been to alleviate human suffering and to promote the person hood of all people. Thus, the ministry of Church for Sanctuary.

As a young ordained clergyman, this writer saw people of color denied admission to public facilities based on the color of their skin. That first experience is so engraved in my consciousness it’s like it happened yesterday. It became my introduction into, and my active participation in the civil rights movement.

This writer clergyman was at Kent State University the day Ohio National Guard shot and killed students at the university. This writer was there recruiting students to participate in a march against the war in Vietnam. It’s a terrible experience to see people beaten and gassed for expressing a grievance to the American government. Another, life shaping experience.

The war ended and this clergyman moved on to fight for equal and fair housing and prison reform. This writer saw people beaten by the police for demanding fair and equal housing, and prison reform. As a personal witness, this writer saw inmates slammed against chain linked fences and put in a inhumane ” Black Box ” without windows, and naked, out doors to suffer the cruelty of hot summers or cold winters. Some injustices one is powerless to end. This writer clergyman was in a position, and did end the use of a chain linked fences and black boxes as a tool for punishment.

While, the surface has only been scratched concerning experiences that shape a life. One hopes readers can appreciate. Why it makes it easy for this writer. To understand and appreciate the AI tag of the gulag of our times for this current administration.

You see, a gulag, for this writer does not have to represent mass detainment of people under cruel and inhumane conditions as under Stalin. A gulag can represent the inhumane treatment of just one person. This writers experiences represent a gulag for all the people harmed.

To be continued.

This writer clergyman is available to provide religious services. Topics of your choice. Get answers for your interest. Sacraments provided for the celebration of your life experiences. Church for Sanctuary is blind to color and creed. It is with out walls. Study the Gnostic’s Bible and learn the truth about Christ, Mary, and the Church. It is nothing like what most people think. There must be a reason why the church omitted some of the Bible.

The ” gulag of our times “

The ” gulag of our times ” stated in the preamble of Amnesty Internationals annual report by Irene Khan, Secretary General. Set of a whirlwind of criticism from the current administration in Washington and many newspapers through out the country.

” Gulag ” is a reference to forced labor camps during the regime of Stalin. It has been said that tens of millions of people were placed in such camps. Many thousands of people died in those camps under very harsh and inhumane conditions.

The critics of Amnesty International ( hereafter AI ) report that it is unfair to associate what the current administration is doing with its detainees as a ” gulag.” The Russian government of that era had imprisoned more than fifteen million people. It is estimated that the imprisonment of people by the current American administration as it wages war on terrorism according to AI is around 70,000. While a match in numbers are not comparable, it does not mean that the world does not have another ” gulag. ” For incidence, Stalin’s ” gulag ” of harsh and inhumane conditions did not occur overnight. The American ” gulag ” is only in its infancy. Only time will determine if the numbers between the two gulags are comparable in harshness and being inhumane.

Stalin, made no claims of being a global champion of human rights, as does George W. Bush (hereafter W. ) ” W’s ” war on terror continues to violate and make mockery of human rights abroad and at home. Case in point torture of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison. At home former USAF professor, Sami Al-Arian. W refuses to apply the Geneva Conventions for those captured during armed conflict in Afghanistan and transferred to Guantanamo, Cuba and detained. The International Committee of the Red Cross chided the administration for their ambivalence for human rights. Justice Stephen Bryer said, ” it seems rather contrary to an idea of a Constitution with three branches that the executive would be free to do whatever they want, whatever without a check. The government of W is seen abroad and at home as being a danger to human dignity.

It must be remembered that an assault on liberty and human rights in the name of the Patriot Act is being waged here in the United States. Do we have an American gulag in the making? AI seems to have arrived at that opinion, at least on the international scene.

It would not be the first time we had a ” gulag ” Consider the systematic extermination of Native Americans, or the forced enslavement of African Americans and associated lynchings.

A historic day is upon this nation. The Senate is set to offer an apology to African Americans for not outlawing lynchings. The preamble to the Constitution reads, “WE hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. “The apology will come in the form of a resolution.

Just think this land of liberty refused to pass laws to prosecute white men for killing black men. Attempts were made to pass laws making it a crime to lynch people. The first such resolution was proposed ONE HUNDRED AND FIVE YEARS ago. Three times congress attempted to pass laws making it a crime to lynch people. Each attempt failed in the Senate because Southern Democrats used the filibuster to prohibit a vote.

It was argued that such federal laws would violate ‘ State Rights. ‘

The sad thing about this resolution is that the congress is not acting on its own initiative. The congress has been successfully lobbied according to Mark Planning, counsel for the Committee for a Formal Apology. Better late than never!!! (Source St. Petersburg Times, Sunday, June 12, 2005, p.3A., The Nation, Washington Post.)

Bob Dylan with his critique of war from his CD ” With God On Our Side ” sings you do not count the dead when God is on your side. This nation has always believed that God was on its side. The nation felt it was okay to slaughter Native Americans, enslave African Americans, condone lynchings because they falsely believe that God was on their side.

Perhaps AI is right on the mark when it reported. ” The detention facility at Guantanamo Bay has become the gulag of our times, entrenching the practice of arbitrary and indefinite detention in violation of international law.” ” Trials by military commissions have made a mockery out of justice and due process.”

This writer has concluded that American fondness for atrocities against Native Americans, African Americans, including unlawful lynching in the name of ‘ state rights ‘ could well have been a gulag. Perhaps the tag to this government as the ” gulag of our times ” is justified. WE shall see because this writer will be posting more on the AI 2005 report.

Faulting Bush always seems to be a way like the election of 2000, or Amenesty Intenatonal 2005 report

Theme from the Kennebunkport Hillbilly (sung to the tune of the Beverly Hillbillies Theme song.)

Come and listen to my story ’bout a boy named Bush.
His IQ was zero and his head was up his tush.
He drank like a fish while he drove all about.
But that did not matter ‘cuz his daddy bailed him out.

DUI, that is. Criminal record cover-up.

Well, the first thing you know little Georgie goes to Yale.
He can’t spell his name but they never let him fail.
He spends his time hangin’ out with student folk.
And that’s when he learns how to snort a line of coke.

Blow, that is. White Gold. Nose candy.

Twenty years later George gets a little bored.
He trades in his booze, says that Jesus is his Lord.
He said, ” Now the White House is the place I wanna be.”
So, he called his daddy’s friends and, they called the GOP.

Gun owners, that is, Falwell, Jessie Helms.

Come November 7, the election ran late.
Kin folks said “Jeb give the boy your state!”
“Don’t let those colored folks get into the polls.”
So they put up barricades so they could not punch their holes.

Chads, that is. Duval County. Miami – Dade.

Before the votes were counted five Supremes step in.
Told all the voters! “Hey we want George to win.”
“Stop counting votes!” was the solemn invocation.
And that is how George finally got his connection.

Rigged, that is illegitimate. No moral authority.

Y’ all come vote now. Ya hear?

Secret British Document

It has been reported that the Army will officially report a major short fall in fiscal year 2005 recruiting efforts for the first time in this young century. The goal was 80,000 recruits for the year. Some sources in the government report that the Army will be fortunate if it reaches fifty percent of its goal. That is good news. After all, who wants to enlists and go to Iraq and die. Die for a immoral and criminal war does not seem like a good life choice.

A new document has emerged and printed in The London Sunday Times that unveils how Great Britain and the United States conspired to find a way to go to war with Iraq. The evidence is in a memo titled,”The Secret Downing Street Memo.” In which the British Foreign Secretary said ‘ w ‘ had decided to go to war. But going to war was problematic because Iraq was not threatening its neighbors. Iraqi WMD was less of a threat than the weapons of Libya, Iran, or North Korea. According to the memo, “the intelligence and facts were being fixed around policy.”

The unanswered questions from the memo. How premeditated was this war? To what extent did ‘ w ‘ go manipulate the necessity for his war?

Congress needs to conduct hearings and decide if ‘ w ‘ committed High Crimes and Misdemeanors the standard for impeachment.

Perhaps with Army enlistments down the American public is signalling the administration to get out of Iraq. And with, The Downing Street Memo, Secret and strictly personal – UK EYES ONLY. Just might spark congress to conduct hearings. It’s a long shot but hope is eternal.
